I was first introduced to collage work in my Drawing class at Concordia. The prof explained how we could draw with paper. I loved the idea. I would like to give a big thank you to Denise and David from St Armand paper. This amazing atelier on St Patrick street has been making hand made paper the old fashioned way for longer than I have been alive. The color of the paper comes from the color of the fabric that they use to make the paper. In addition, they will incorporate flowers, or seeds to give the paper texture. I have used these features of the paper in my work, for example the seeds in the paper give a feel of marble in the columns of the collage called "Girl with a Unicorn".
The image of a park was the first one that I made. In it, I included a little "rules" sign similar to those that have become ubiquitous in society lately, but I have added a few rules of my own as a comment on how far things have gone. | | | The second collage in the series is my take on Nike, Victory at Samothrace. In this work I am mainly experimenting with the many tonalities of white paper that I was able to find at St Armand Paper. | | | "Girl with a Unicorn" is based upon a similarly named painting by Raphael. Raphael based his image on La Giaconda, but he added the Unicorn as at that time the unicorn symbolized chastity. He also added the ruby necklace, which implied that the sitter was wealthy. | |
